Posted by CLP at August 9, 2004 12:45 AMCLP3 RULED!!!
AM SO COMING TO THE NEXT ONE WHENEVER IT IS.
Posted by: Rage at August 9, 2004 05:32 AMIt's a shame the police and London Underground was boring and stopped us. They claimed it was too much people on the train. Have they ever traveled in rush hour?
Posted by: Martin at August 9, 2004 08:53 AMWas on the second party train (the one that didn't get emptied at Sloane Square and instead did an anti-clockwise circle from Victoria) and had a fine time. Many thanks to everyone who "boozed me" in exchange for the tiny bit of music I was able to provide; it hurt later.
The party in Sloane Square was fantastic; didn't even bother heading to the Spitz. Numbers eventually dwindled to 8 of us, chatting over Suzie's accordion, and then disappearing into the night.
Exceptional. Roll on the next.
Posted by: DJ IB at August 9, 2004 09:00 AMThe CLP3 was awesome, even though the main train only got as far as Sloane Square before we were all kicked off. The police were good natured though - especially as everyone tidied up the carriages when leaving them. One policeman said we were less trouble than they normally get on a friday night and after a while at Sloane Square, most of them went home. Great fun and I'll be there for the next one, whenever that is!
Posted by: Tom Powell at August 9, 2004 10:17 AMWow what a party!
Despite dripping in sweat it was hilariously fun. Everyone was drinking, sharing sweets and chocolates and decorating the carriages with flowers and new posters....
Unfortunately the police were called and got grumpy and spoilt our party, even arresting one of the party goers! Idiots...
But that didnt stop us, and as they chucked us out at Sloane Square station we took over the square and partied for hours with music, alcohol and happy (less sweaty) people.
Nice one!
Posted by: SubZeroCat at August 9, 2004 10:28 AMWell, I for one had an ace time, and, despite being on the first party train that did get stopped, managed to both enjoy myself immensely - and get very very (*very*) drunk.
In case the pretty young police girl who was looking after Fred the police dog whilst being flirted with shamelessly by a guy in a feather boa is reading this - email me please ;)
Cheers to all, and heres to the next one... (*imagine me raising a glass*)
Posted by: Paul at August 9, 2004 11:16 AMI was the one with the Yellow t-shirt dark glasses and look of panic darting between the carriages trying to get the first train to split up at Victoria. Eventually we headed anti-clockwise from Victoria to Liverpool Street and the Spitz. Apparently I was dancing and carried one of the pole dancing stages back to the Spitz. I have no recollection of the train journey or walk to the Spitz. Can anyone tell me if I enjoyed myself on the train apparently I was dancing. Email me if you can help fill in this lost episode of my life. Cheers
Posted by: Litost at August 9, 2004 11:58 AMI found out later on in the night that the following party was allowed to proceed unmolested (albeit in in a non-traditional direction) - but didn't know until now that Sloane Square turned into Party Central (but I suppose I should have guessed).
How long did the police keep up the ridiculously overblown presence?
Posted by: Manic at August 9, 2004 12:12 PMThis little ditty is called "The Venga Train, or in short: Why London Rocks!"
But why does London rock I hear you all ask? Well it could be the spell of recent stunning eather (on a beautiful day there's really no better vibe in the world), it could be the people spilling onto the streets out of the pubs on a hot summer evening, it could be the amazing live music I keep hearing - band after band after band, it could even be the fact that topshop is most definitely a top shop, but what I'm loving most is the diversity! Of people, of choice, of art, and of urban culture. There's never an excuse for "I'm bored, there's nothing to do!" because there never isn't anything to do. More so than in other city I've been to you really can feel as if you can have your finger on some kind of pulse in this place. And what a beat that pulse has!
Friday morning I opened my email to a little heads up from this website I've signed up to for daily bites of "Londonisms". Upon opening, I found the following: "Tube journeys are usually the least enjoyable part of Friday nights, but tonight hundreds of hedonists will sneak onto the Circle Line for the hottest party this summer."
"What? Hedonists? That's me!" I thought. "Tell me more". And quickly I clicked on the link.
"Stereo equipment, disco lights, nibbles and copious amounts of alcohol are all smuggled onto trains in suitcases. When the train pulls away from the station, the pole dancing podium is assembled and the tequila bar set up. Every time the doors open the suitcases slam shut and everyone tries to look like bored commuters."
What hedonist could resist such an invitation? At 7:58pm I waited at Aldgate station with my mate to board what was now known as the Venga Train. Looking around us we could easily spot many other party goers by the suspicious 'clink, clink' sound of their plastic bags. We all surreptiously grinned at each other.
Upon arrival of the tube my eyes near left my head - even in peak hour I'd never seen that many people squashed into carriages - and we're talking not 1 but at least 5 carriages. And rumour quickly had it that this was over not 1 but 2 separate trains. We're talking about a good 800 people here. All of them riding the Party Train to Party Central.
A quick look at each other, a deep breath and we squeezed ourselves in, said our hello's to those around us and in the spirit of things whacked a party hat on our heads and cracked open a drink. Looking around I could see that everyone was drinking, sharing sweets and chocolates and decorating the carriages with flowers and new posters.... "It's the Tube Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it", I thought to myself as the doors slammed shut tightly behind us; aboard and no going back.
The Party Train pulled out of Aldate station to a racous cheer from the overspilling carriages. Then the music started and everyone was dancing and smiling together in true PLUR fashion. Aldgate to Tower Hill. Tower Hill to Monument. Monument to Cannon St. We were off and we were heading east! Each time the tube left a station and hit the tunnels again a massive cheer would make it's way down the carriages. Pulling into each station there was a round of "sshhhh shhhhhhhhh's!" as carriages full of squashed, but over-excited 20 - 30year olds tried to look like "bored commuters"...and failed dismally.
Which probably explains why when pulling into Sloane Square we were met by some very puzzled Bobbies. "People happy on the tube?" they murmered amongst themselves, scratching their heads in amazement as they tried to figure out what to do with us all. Obviously someone had complained at some stage along our 30 minute journey.
In hindsight it could've been the "DANGER! THIS TRAIN HAS BEEN HIJACKED!" signs stuck to the windows that gave us away. Or perhaps it was merely the group sing-alongs of "Silent Night" and "If you're happy and you know it..." from the Official Unofficial Party Songbook. Whichever way, we'll never be sure as the Party train was quickly cancelled and everyone on the 1st of the 2 trains was evacuated to the platform (which we easily filled!). Smart they might be, but they hadn't yet cottoned on to the fact that there were indeed 2 Venga Trains in circulation, the 2nd of which passed us all to a big belly cheers as we continued to dance on the platform to the beat of the bongo drums.
The Coppers weren't sure what to do with us - it was obvious that if they stopped any of the trains at the station we'd just hop back on, so they closed the station and kicked us all onto the street where we filled Sloane Square, the bongo's soon started up again and another inpromptu discotastic party started up as people climbed up statues and started to dance again. The Bobbies just stood back and quietly watched, shaking their heads and having a laugh.
In short: We made a bunch of new instant "friends", saw more PLUR and good feeling in one spot that you can poke a stick at and there was atmosphere on the Party Train that people would pay good money for if it was bottled.
Top night!
Posted by: lil_jazz at August 9, 2004 12:31 PMI laughed, I sweated, I drank, I sweated , I laughed , I "elvis'd" , I sweated some more.
Why isnt this a monthly event !?!
Posted by: Gug at August 9, 2004 12:33 PMWas fantastic, even though it got ever so slightly busted, still had a ball at sloane square.
Thanks to everyone who came for making it soo much fun!!
Lets do it again sometime !!
oh yeah....I want to see some photos!!!!
Posted by: xes at August 9, 2004 12:49 PMLondon Underground and the Police were utterly useless. How annoying! They could have easily let the party continue but decided that it would be easier to close a station and inconvience the very passengers we trying to cheer up!
Was slightly annoyed that we got kicked off the 2nd train but we did manage to party in the end. After party was great, as was the final Aldgate park gathering.
Can't wait for the next one!
Posted by: Hyper B at August 9, 2004 01:06 PMDefinitely need some photos posted - I have a vague memory of people attempting camera phone pictures but only managing to get random ears/feet! The most fantastic night out ever! Hi to the guy (and his boyfriend) on the second train who danced (almost but not quite) naked round the pole - I helped look after your trousers! Can't wait for the next one!
Posted by: Emma at August 9, 2004 01:12 PMAfter one of the bleakest weeks I've had in years, the CL3 party restored my faith in humanity! I danced and whooped and doled out the vodka like a man possessed.
And if you were the cheeky blonde in the stripey pink top in Aldgate, who kept talking to me, then I apologise for being the shy type. You were more than a little cute (and sadly I'm more than a little out of practise).
Roll on the next one! Buckingham palace, I hear?
Posted by: -=Raize=- at August 9, 2004 01:51 PMAaarrrggghhhh..!!! we missed it! missed it all! We arrived slightly late hoping to catch the tube on the 2nd lap but alas, nothing but a few deflated balloons greeted us... so off we swanned to Spitz to no after-party - i assume you were all in Sloane Square.
Boo hoo :-(
When's the next one?
Posted by: Ida at August 9, 2004 02:03 PMIda: Two train-bound parties did eventually make it to Spitz - but for the life of me I can't remember what time we got there...
Posted by: Manic at August 9, 2004 02:27 PMWell, I was kinda late and missed the first train and prayed that anotherone was coming along. Needless to say I have never enjoyed being stuck in a tunnel better. Next time I will be better prepared and bring some more booze as I felt bad about not having something to bring back. all in all, if I find out about the party I will be sure to go!
Posted by: Daniel at August 9, 2004 02:44 PMAm gutted that firstly, I heard about this in time but secondly, I couldn't come.
Posted by: nick at August 9, 2004 02:54 PMQuality stuff, was brilliant when we pulled out of liverpool st. and the podiums and posters came out. I was more than a little up for it and my throat was killing me by the evening, dont think ive ever whooped so much at a party in my life.
Made the mistake of getting covered in soot but it was still quality, had a club to go to afterwards but i could have quite happily danced around shouting 'rrrreeeeebbbba!' all night.
Was trying to convince some of the trendies hanging out in the bars around sloane square to join in the party but i think they were slightly dubious of anyone having fun who hadn't paid £50 to do it...
Big up to whoever was playing ghostbusters!
Posted by: Dan at August 9, 2004 03:13 PMarses! my girlfriend and i were down in london from glasgow on friday but were too busy drinking above ground. wish we'd known about this (or even stumbled across it by accident): sounds fantastic. utter respect to you all.

many thanks for the best night out i've had in a long time.

Posted by: colm at August 9, 2004 04:56 PMGreat stuff!
Sloane Square was utterly brilliant, with such a great atmosphere.
Well done everyone for making it so much fun.
Posted by: Griff at August 9, 2004 05:59 PMWell who really would have expected a party in the middle of a roundabout in slone square! Even though it meant the tube party stopped too early thanks to the police for picking such a great spot to herd us all!
300 people dancing madly to 5 odd people with drums on a busy roundabout in one of the poshest part of london is something I'm not going to forget!
Restpect to the organisers. Can we have another one next week please? :)
Posted by: dervish at August 9, 2004 06:43 PM:D wasn't saying the people with drums were odd btw. I meant "about"! Mind you they might have been pretty odd. The naked geezer with drum was a sight to remember anyway. :)
Posted by: dervish at August 9, 2004 06:45 PMWhat a top night! Got on the first party train, squashed in like a hot little sardine and grinning like a loon (also sweating like a pig!) when the train left the tunnel, a huuuuuge cheer went up and *bang!* suddenly tube travel became a whole new experience.
Chains of flowers wrapped round the grab-bars, decks laid out and speakers hung up, and suddenly someone shouts 'anyone want a Ferrero Rocher?' Pure class! A tray of sandwiches (beautifully cut into triangles) is passed over everyone's heads, the marshmallows disappear into the crowd and everywhere you look, there's a smiling face and an open bottle of booze.
Cue singing and dancing to Ghostbusters and trying to swig absinthe (but failing the first ten times as the carriage kept jolting!) Cue lots of giggling and sssshhhhh-ing when we stopped at a station. Although it was pretty damn useless, as everyone was already too over-excited and waving their beers/party poppers/lollies at baffled commuters. Then - off again!
Great memories of strapping a shagging dog toy to everyone's arms, dancing in Sloane Square, and best of all, grinning at the little old man who ended up in our carriage. Someone gave him a seat, someone else gave him a glass of wine, and soon he was setting off party poppers and munching sweets like a veteran. He even waved in a cheerfully confused way at passing trains when we got kicked off at Sloane Square!
I was really impressed by the 100mph clean-up of our carriage when we all had to pile off - nice to see no-one wanted to make a bad name for the CLP by leaving a mess...
Most bizarre moment? When I popped into a Sloane Square Trendy Wine Bar (tm) to use the loo, and a posh, middle aged foreign businessman said hello then immediately asked if I'd sleep with him! What a sleaze!
I was a tourist in London (from the states) and just happened upon the CLP. It was one of the highlights of my trip, I tell everyone about it! I was in the car in front of the party but as the party grew they moved into our car - offering treats, beer and strawberries. The group had a CD playing and got everyone in the car to sing along and dance. I didn't want to get off @ my stop!
I cannot tell you how much fun it was to stumble upon the "spontaneous gathering"
Posted by: Seattle Tourist at August 10, 2004 02:26 AMHas anyone else been on the cirle line since the party? I got on it last night and started grinning like a mad woman - had a look about and everyone else looked really miserable. I'm sure people were changing carriages because they though I was insane!!
Posted by: Emma at August 10, 2004 11:21 AMWhat a hoot - Well done to the organisers for expanding our minds, to all those that attended and made it happen and a special thanks to the girl who dished out the freshly baked cookies on a baking tray - scrummy yumsious!
Posted by: Jeroo* at August 10, 2004 01:13 PMWith my faith in humanity suitably restored I have been smiling all week. Many thanks to the organisers and all the lovely people I met and gibbered at. Who'd have thought swimming trunks would have been so appropriate on a tube? I'm glad my trousers came in useful for someone :)
Posted by: Alex at August 10, 2004 03:11 PMSwimming trunks is right. Never been so hot on the tube but how cool was it? Will bring twice as much glitter and biscuits next time. Please please please can next time be soon....
Posted by: Lixie at August 11, 2004 10:49 AMWe didn't make it onto any trains. Were waiting at South Kensington and waited and waited. Eventually and empty train with balloons and stuff on the floor came through :( We headed for Sloane Square and joined the party in the Square. Loads of fun!

Anyone know who the cute guy in the 'paked train' picture is? the tall guy with long ish dark hair and a yellow ish collar. talked to him a bit at sloane sq party and he was lovely. think his name was simeon and he had a frisbee and we drank cava and he helped me cheer up my friend.
Posted by: Bagotrix at August 12, 2004 04:32 PMi can honestly say that the CLP was the bast party ive ever been to,ive been to more raves and squat parties than i can even remember but this one blew them all away! i spent the rest of the weekend with the hangover from hell but it was well worth it just to hang out with a bunch of strangers on the tube.can't wait until the next one! see you there
Posted by: sunny at August 12, 2004 08:04 PMWell i made it to the first train after decdiding to wait at a random platform and see if i could catch the "party train". Got on the 3rd(?) carrage and whipped out my portable party lights that I had from the new year. Had an exelent time ont the train and at sloane square, though I had to call it an early ngiht becouse I had to pack for my holiday.
What an exelent start to my holiday week. :p
Posted by: Mumbles at August 20, 2004 02:04 AMHey, does anyone know where I can see photos of the event, I didnt bring my camara and want to see if I was in any of them. (I had vines all over me, kinda like Ceasar). Anyway CLP3 was an amazing event, with a very behaved police, very unlike the New York police arresting protestors (including me for riding a bike) during the Bush convention. Viva CLP!!
Posted by: El Mac at September 2, 2004 09:41 AMHi, just wondering when the next CLP will be approximently?... if someone could email me with a date I'll writing an article for my Students' Union newspaper and would love to organise a group students to come along to the next party!
Thanks -x-
Posted by: Phil at October 8, 2004 11:46 PMHi,

Hi I'm fred I've been mixing collecting drum + bass for ten years. Have played on pirate radio
+ do'nt a dj slot up at the scala back in 2001. then I started creating through technology course at the british academy of new music + have been studying for 3 years there now.
I pick up the harder hardcore sounding new drum + bass with the odd promo thrown in.
I tend not to play what everyone else is playing + will always come up with something different. My mixing is tight + tune selection is heavy + atmospheric. I have been doing old skool hardcore 90-93 mixes + just finished a 94-95 mix.
Is there somewhere I can send you a demo to listen to I want to get working again as I have a good 4 new sets + 3 old skool sets which are defo doin the business for me.
When's the next one? is there a mailing list?
